Address: Jalan Melati, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Postcode (Poskod): 55100 Kuala Lumpur
Area: Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (KL / WP)
Jurisdiction: Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur DBKL - KL City Hall (See Local Govt)

Directions: Pasar Rakyat is extremely confusing to approach if you are not familiar with the one-way streets behind Imbi. Best to approach from Loke Yew roundabout using Jalan Tun Razak. When you get into the traffic-lighted Kg Pandan roundabout, keep straight (12 o'clock) to go towards Jalan Bukit Bintang. Turn into Jalan Selatan which is the first turning after the roundabout. Turn right into Jalan Delima thereafter and you should see the bus station.

Info / Review: Pasar Raykat was supposed to be a greens and fresh food market selling produce obtained directly from farmers. Things didn't work out exactly as envisioned and it became a prime candidate for Kuala Lumpur's patchwork transport system. True enough, it soon turned into a bus terminal to complement the other far-flung ones, randomly scattered all over the city.

The Pasar Rakyat bus station handles express buses to and from Singapore, and Genting Highlands. Why these two places in particular? It is a winning combination you bet. It seems many Singaporeans come to KL only because it is a transit point to their beloved hill resort. True?

There are three KL-Singapore bus companies with ticketing counters located on the front of the building. The buses stop at a big barren piece of land in front of Pasar Rakyat. From here, buses take their passengers to the relatively less remote Golden Mile Complex in Singapore.

Some of the bus companies with ticket counters operating at Hentian Bas Pasar Rakyat:
Transtar Express: Tel: +603 2142 2771
Five Stars Express: Tel: +603 2142 8077
Konsortium Bas Ekspres
Gunung Raya

No taxi coupon system is in place at this transportation terminal. Bewildered first time arrivers usually fall straight into the hungry jaws of predatory cabbies hanging out there. Although the terminal is walking distance to the busy red light areas of Imbi, it is not advisable especially when you carry tell-tale luggage. Bus ticket holders can park their cars at a special rate of RM 15 for 24 hours.

What about the Pasar? The morning market is still there but relegated to one small end of the giant warehouse-like building. The empty spaces are occupied by a few stalls, a supermarket, a Pos Malaysia counter and a food court. Another restaurant occupies the courtyard.

For the adventurous, the back of Imbi offers an astonishing array of restaurants and bistros. Not only that. The area has developed into a little chocolate haven with the opening of several choc boutiques. They cater mostly to tourists herded there by tour buses. Now, how many Malaysians know that Malaysia is popular for its chocolates, let alone at the boondocks of KL? :)
