Directions: Masjid India is a triangular enclave etched out by Jalan Ampang, Jalan Dang Wangi and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
Info / Insights: The name Masjid India here refers more to the area than to the century-old mosque built by the Indian-Muslim community of KL. See Masid India The Mosque (http://www.masjidindia.com/).
The 1960s saw the construction of inner city flats such as Selangor Mansion, Malayan Mansion and Sulaiman Court (now Sogo) in the area. The merchants of Masjid India quickly turned the former two into shops, offices, stores and halfway houses for newly-landed migrant workers.
Jalan Masjid India was then considered more of a 'complementary lane' behind bustling Batu Road (Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman). It was during that era (1970s) when Globe Silk Store and Emporium Selangor ruled the retail scene of Kuala Lumpur.
Curiously, the other side of the street provided the only entertainment for many KLites at night. City folks would congregate nightly to ogle at the many cross-dressers hanging out there. Maybe the presence of so many bald mannequins at the textile shops developed into a fetish :)
The fascinating, colourful and noisy potpourri of trade and cultural activities earned Masjid India the (inconsistent) moniker of "Little India". A road in Brickfields is also laying claim to that title now. The sheltered pedestrian bazaar in front of Wisma Yakin may be a late add-on but the entire length of Jalan Masjid India springs to life during the month of Ramadan and the weeks leading to Deepavali.
