Directions: From Jalan Genting Klang, turn into Jalan Usahawan and turn left at the traffic junction where Sri Utama School is located. Immediately, you will see a warehouse-like building on your left. There is a 'no-entry' sign on top of the entrance (exit) but almost every vehicle ignores it. If you prefer to be safe, go a bit further up and turn left into the workshop area and to where Sports Seven (http://www.s7.com.my/) futsal court is located. There are hardly any signs for NSK, front or back.
Info / Insights: The place is dark, damp and appears disorganised. The trolleys won't go in a straight line and are smeared with yucky left-over. A bunch of pigeons hang out on a cable above, ready to colourize your hair. Inconsiderate customers habitually abandon their emptied trolleys behind the nearest parked vehicle. The sleepy security guard looks like he fell off the back of a truck carrying fish from Thailand. I can go on but....
As you would have guessed, I love this place! It has character, attitude and guts. It is not your usual, boring, template hypermart. Most importantly, you won't find poor Indonesian maids pushing spoilt brats in empty trolleys here (see slso my 2004 blog on Mall Brats). There is also no PA system to irritate you with repeated announcements of a lost child. Instead, treat your ears to melodic Burmese chatter from staff members.
I asked the nice manager why is the place so dark and smelly? He explained their niche crowd love it as it is. Apparently, such customers subscribe to the belief that whenever a building is damp, moldy and falling apart, the prices must be truthfully low. Who am I to argue against established supermarket science? I just think of it as a no-frills, budget supermarket.
I observed the place for a while before stepping in. If you see price-conscious traders busy loading up their trucks, prices must be indeed low. For example, Sea Marine RO water retails at RM 6.50 for a carton of 24 (500ml) bottles. That works out to around 27 sen per bottle. A carton of the 'upmarket' Aquarius mineral water works out to be around 39 sen per (600ml) bottle. Inside the low-cost LCCT, it is selling at RM 3.90 per bottle.
The great thing about this NSK supermarket is that you can buy a single item unlike many other wholesalers. Besides, there is an authentic mamak stall with a leaky tent in the compound.
Updates: Glad to see the establishment taking feedback positively. Since then, they have installed a nice new signboard, got new trolleys and a brighter interior. Wonder how they got rid of the pigeons though :)
Trivia: Also known as Pasaraya Topzeller, the place was a food court previously. There is a bigger 24-hour NSK wholesale centre in Selayang known as NSK Trade City.
