Directions: From the North-South Highway, exit into Jalan Kebun Nenas or into Jalan Baru at the Penang Bridge intersection. Drive towards Bukit Mertajam town and proceed to Jalan Kulim. During the annual festival, traffic is chaotic and most streets made one-way.

Info: It was at Batu Kawan, as early as 1833 that Catholics first originated in Province Wellesley. They were mainly Chinese and Indian. It was from here that the Catholics gradually moved to Permatang Tinggi, Macang Bubok and Bukit Mertajam. By 1840, the Chinese Catholics started settling down at the Bukit Mertajam foothill.

The early priests were all Frenchmen and they visited Bukit Mertajam from Batu Kawan. In 1846, the first visiting priest, Fr. Adolphe Couellan decided that there was a need for a chapel and built one just below where now stands the hill top St. Anne's statue...
- historical account from St Anne Sanctuary's website

Today, the Church stands on grounds huge enough to accommodate the enormous crowd that show up during the annual St. Anne's Novena & Feast. Hundreds of thousands of worshippers and tourists from all over the country congregate on the holy site in the month of July.

If you are there on a normal day, you may find more room and time to study the interesting Minangkabau roof design of the newer church building and the life-size replicas of the 15 'stations of the cross' scattered on the big church compound.

Unlike those aggressive born-again jaga keretas found during Thaipusam in Batu Caves or at the Nine Emperor Gods Festival in Ampang, their meek counterparts in Bukit Mertajam charge only RM 2 (as opposed to the minimal RM 10 in Klang Valley).
