A play in one act by Asia's first Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore
Kuala Lumpur, 18th November, 2008 – KLPac is proud to bring to you a classic from one of the major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the Mahabharata, woven into a lyrical drama by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Chitra written by Rabindranath Tagore, is directed by Helena Foo and features Lakshman Balakrishnan & Joylynn Teh. With Dato' Faridah Merican as executive producer and Joe Hasham as artistic director.
Dates: 19 - 23 November (Wed - Sat at 8.30pm & Sun at 3pm)

In a year that has seen endless contemporary pieces, KLPac is proud to present a classic by Asia's first Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Chitra, a play in one act, tells the story of the daughter and only child of King Manipur. Brought up like a boy and heir to the throne, she is proud of her prowess and manliness.
Things change, however, when she encounters Arjuna, a prince of the house of the Kurus. Beseeching the help of the Gods, she transforms into a beautiful woman to win him. But soon after, guilt starts to settle in as she questions the illusion that she has created in Arjuna's heart. Highly regarded for his poetry, Tagore's works are well-known for its rhythmic and lyrical nature.
This staging not only brings to life the eloquent writing of Tagore but also fleshes out essential questions about identity, truth vs. illusion and what love really is. Intertwined with some movement and dance by rising choreographer / dancer Lakshman Balakrishnan, it promises to be an intriguing watch...
