Area: Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (KL / WP)
Jurisdiction: Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur DBKL - KL City Hall (See Local Govt / KL Map)
Directions: Sandwiched between Sungei Wang Plaza and Imbi Plaza, Low Yat Plaza is hidden from the main road. From Jalan Bukit Bintang, after the Lot 10 junction, turn into the sideroad (Jalan Bulan) at the corner of Bukit Bintang Plaza or at the side road of Federal Hotel. From Petaling Jaya, approach via Jalan Sg Besi or via Jalan Hang Tuah from Loke Yew. When driving from Jalan Sultan Ismail, the only approach is via the congested Raja Chulan/ Bukit Bintang bottleneck (behind Pavilion). Exit is easier via the new link to the SMART Tunnel and Kg Pandan roundabout / to KL-Putrajaya Highway.
On foot from Bintang Walk (Lot 10), walk pass Reflexology Walk and turn left into the lane just before BB Park. If you are already in Sg Wang Plaza, use its Bulan Entrance at the back of the mall.
Info / Review: Low Yat Plaza succeeded at what many failed to accomplish previously. It dethroned Imbi Plaza as the leading IT marketplace. The shopping haven for geeks and tech buffs has shops selling PCs, Macs, notebooks (laptops), memory, storage, computer accessories, parts and peripherals, all under one roof. IT hypermart tenants include All IT Hypermarket and Sri Computers (see Computer Vendors). Of course, mobile phone and CCTV vendors are making an increasing presence. On some weekends, the mall takes on a PC Fair bazaar-like atmosphere with endless crowds. The non-original software resellers have mostly dissapeared after stricter enforcement. The mall is sometimes incorrectly referred to as lau yat or lauyat. It also spawned a popular local tech forum lowyyat.net (not related or affiliated though).
Ample parking is available below the building. There is a food court and ATM machines on the basement floor. The ground floor has a couple of camera shops, several PDA resellers and a Starbucks with wi-fi. The first floor has shops selling mostly mobile phone and cellular accessories. The computer hardware shops populate the 2nd floor and upwards. Somewhere on those floors, is a money changer. The few remaining non-electronics shop on the mezzanine floor are rapidly displaced. Mercifully, there are no pesky promoters attacking shoulders with vibrating massagers here.
Toilet charges are a bit expensive, considering the mall is patronised by many students looking for bargains. The car jockey service is efficient and they are equally efficient in protecting their turf. First time visitors be warned that the parking bays on the road in front of the building are not DBKL's and are not available unless you pay prime rates. It may look like a public road but it is actually private property.
Built on the former open-air car park of the Federal Hotel, which was in turn, the site of the legendary BB Park of the 1960's. Low Yat Plaza is named after the founder of the historic Federal Hotel, the late Tan Sri Low Yat. His son, Tan Sri Sri Dato’ Low Yow Chuan (current Chairman of Low Yat Group), also has a building in his name; Yow Chuan Plaza (now Plaza Ampang).
