Address: Jalan Hang Jebat (formerly Jonker Street), Melaka Darul Azim, Malaysia
Postcode (Poskod): 75200 Melaka
Area: Melaka City, State Of Melaka (Malacca - old spelling) (MC/DA)
Jurisdiction: Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah - MBMB (
                         (See Local Govt)

Directions: Jonker Street is located near the river mouth of Sungei Melaka, near where the seafront used to be. Massive land reclamation pushed the sea back and changed the landscape of the coastal city drastically. The roads in the area are extremely narrow and luckily they are mostly one-way now. Despite its narrowness, street parking is available and a coupon system is used.

Info: The historical city is blessed with so many heritage buildings and cultural icons -- from its glorious and tumultuous past -- that one can spend a few days just exploring by foot. Then again, it also spots some seemingly incongruous, out-of-place implants like the viewing tower and that nomadic Ferris wheel.

Jonker Street (together with nearby Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock) in the old Chinatown serves as a great introduction to the old world charm of Melaka. The street is lined with centuries-old shop houses, art galleries, antique shops and the obligatory souvenir kiosks. Look out too, for the food shops or stalls selling chicken rice ball, cendol and colourful Nyonya kueh.

Like as if some ancient town planners had tourism in mind a few hundred years ago, there is a very old temple (Cheng Hoon Teng Temple - built 1645) and mosque (Masjid Kampong Kling - built 1748) located near one another on the street behind Jonker Walk.

On weekend nights, Jonker Walk comes alive with a street market attracting buskers, street musicians, artists and bus loads of tourists. A daytime stroll on a weekday thus may be more intimate and fulfilling.

The Dutch word of Jonker is correctly pronounced by locals as 'Yonker'.
